I'm new here and a bit lost. Is there a survival guide that will explain everything?

  • Welcome to the World Boxing Video Archive community.
You probably feel like a 15 year boy who just walked into his first strip club.
You are excited, overwhelmed, and you're about to go nuts. Well zip up your pants and put your singles back in your wallet - there are some important rules you need to follow or you will find the bouncer tossing you out.
The most important thing to understand about WBVA is that it is a sharing site - that means you need to give and not just take.
Your download/upload ratio is tracked and has a direct impact on your downloading privileges.
What does that mean? If you download a 1GB file, you need to give back 1GB to keep your ratio at 1.
Having a ratio under 1 is a bad thing.
It means you are taking more than you are giving and this community can't function if everyone does that.
It is also important to understand that you do not need to upload original content in order to get upload credit.
Once you have downloaded a file, keep it open in your torrent client and you will be seeding it.
That means that other members who download the file will get it from you. This is how you raise your ratio.
So here are a few tips on how to keep a healthy ratio. Follow them and you'll be good to go.
And once you have a good ratio and a nice buffer (i.e. you have uploaded way more than you have downloaded) you can go nuts.
  • 1) SAY THANK YOU TO UPLOADERS
This actually has nothing to do with ratio but it is really important. The people who upload fights here paid for the broadcast and then invested their own time preparing the files and uploading them here. They did that because they love boxing and they want to share it with enthusiasts like yourself. The least you can do is take a few seconds to let them know you appreciate it. When you click on a torrent, you will see a place to add a comment. Use it. Ungrateful people are not welcome around here.
  • 2) DO NOT DOWNLOAD OLD FIGHTS UNTIL YOU HAVE A HEALTHY RATIO BUFFER
This is the way that 95% of new members get themselves in trouble. You may be really excited that you can finally download Hagler vs Hearns or the Joe Louis career set on DVD but keep this in mind: most of the members have already downloaded all of the classics that they want. That means you will have a very hard time seeding back those fights because no one else is downloading them. You'll have your chance to get them - just be patient. This does not just apply to fights that are years old. Anything that has been on the tracker for more than a few days should be considered old. If the fight is on Saturday, that fight is old by the middle of the week because most of the people have it already. Which leads us to our next tip.

    3) START DOWNLOADING NEW FIGHTS AS SOON AS THEY HIT THE TRACKER
Whether it is ESPN Friday Night Fights, an HBO broadcast, a PPV, or anything else, it is important to get on the file early. Most fights go up within a few hours of the broadcast. If you are one of the first leechers that means that everyone else will be downloading the file from you, which means you are uploading more and improving your ratio. If you get on a file later when more members already have it, there are fewer people for you to share it with.

    4) DOWNLOAD ALL FREE LEECH FILES
You will notice that certain fights have a red label that says [Free]. This means that the download does not count against your ratio but that anything you seed does count. It is a free ratio boost. Even if you are not interested in watching the fight, you can download it and it will only help your ratio. It's money in the bank.
  • 5) SEED 24/7 OR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
It is best to keep your torrent client running as much as possible. If you are constantly seeding your files you stand a much better chance of having someone download it from you. You never know when someone will grab a file so make sure that you are making it available to them. If you can leave your computer on all day, do it. We are a global community so people are on here constantly.
  • 6) GET CONNECTABLE
There is an entire thread explaining what this means and how to do it. You should care because it lets you upload more and will improve your ratio. If you have any questions, your best bet is to take a look in the forums. We've been around for a few years now so chances are that someone has asked it already and that it has been thoroughly answered.
Check the threads that are stickied to the top of forums. If you can't find an answer in there, you can post a question in the appropriate forum. The WBVA community is unbelievably helpful.
So welcome to the greatest place on earth.
    Enjoy yourself.

My account is a mess. I'm thinking about abandoning it and starting a new one. Is this a stupid idea?

  • Yes. It is a horrible idea. It is forbidden to create multiple accounts. We have an automated system that monitors this and even if you use a different email account or log-in with a proxy, you will be found. We have caught literally hundreds of people who thought they could outsmart the system. Don't do it. Anyone who attempts to create multiple accounts will have all accounts deleted and will be permanently banned.

I was too lazy to read the rules and learn how the site works. Now I'm in trouble and can't download. You'll make an exception for me, right?

  • Wrong. Please note that when you signed up and activated your account, you indicated that you had READ the Rules and FAQ pages. If you break the rules and your downloading privileges get disabled, do not attempt to claim that you did not know about the rules. We will show zero tolerance and will not accept ignorance as an excuse.
These guides were written to help our members enjoy the site. Please read them.

What is my ratio and how does it work?

  • The ratio is obtained by dividing the amount that has been uploaded by the amount that has been downloaded.
  • For example: a ratio of 0.5 means that you have downloaded double what you have uploaded, 1.0 means that you have downloaded and uploaded the same amount, and 2.0 means you have uploaded twice as much as you have downloaded.
    Anything below 1.0 is bad.
  • Keep in mind that when you download something, it is because other users have shared/uploaded.
The data does not come from nowhere.
  • If you remove a torrent from your BitTorrent client with a ratio of less than 1.0 it means other users have to pick up the slack for you. If everyone did this, the site would collapse.
  • Whenever possible, we recommend seeding up to a ratio of 1. This is the best way to ensure a healthy ratio.
  • If you can seed a torrent beyond a 1:1 ratio, it is a valuable and appreciated contribution to the community.
  • IMPORTANT:
If you have downloaded more than 10 GBs and your ratio is below 0.33, the system will send you this message:
You have been warned because of having low ratio. You need to get a ratio of 0.35 in the next 2 weeks or your account will be banned.
This means that you need fix your ratio. You have two weeks to raise your ratio. If you don't, your account will be disabled.
Your account will not be disabled if you raise your ratio during the two week period..

How can I get a good ratio?

  • Download free leech torrents. They do not count against your download stats but they do count on the upload stats.
They can only help your ratio.
  • Keep seeding as long as possible. You will get ratio and a seeding bonus, which can be exchanged for ratio.
  • Stay away from the old fights. Everyone has downloaded them and it will be difficult to recover the ratio on these torrents. A fight should be considered old 2-3 days after it has been broadcast. After about 48 hours, the traffic on a torrent drops off sharply.
  • Keep an eye out for the new popular torrents and download them as soon as possible. They will have many leechers and your ratio will increase quickly. The faster you get on a torrent, the more people you will be able to upload to. The later you get on a torrent, the fewer people there are to share it with.
  • You also can also exchange your bonus points for upload credit HERE.

What is the automated H&R (Hit and Run)?

  • This system has been around a long time here. The difference is that it was manual in the past and now it is automatic.
  • This site is possible because our members share their files. If you download any file, you are expected to contribute by sharing it with other users who wish to download it as well.
  • We do not ask much, just that you keep seeding completed torrents for 48 hours (cumulative not 48 hours straight) or to a 1.0 ratio. This is not much to ask... right?
  • If you stop seeding a torrent, it will be flagged as a hit & run and if one of these requirements is not met before 72 hours, it will be flagged as a Cain mark. Resuming seeding during the first 72 hours will remove the Hit&Run.
  • If a member acquires 3 Cain marks, download privileges will automatically be suspended. To remove the Cain mark and regain your download privileges, you just need to seed the file again, until you meet the requirements.
  • Free torrents are excluded from this rule, but is a good practice to keep seeding as long as possible.
  • All Hit&Run details can be found in your profile by viewing completed torrents. There you can see the total seeding time, ratio for each torrent and remaining seed time. To view all details, just then click over your total Hit & Run at the top of the page.
  • You can remove your hit & run flags or Cain marks if you have enough bonus points in your bonus account. Note that you will get one point for every hour you seed a torrent, even if there are no leechers on the torrent. This will be calculated for a maximum of 10 seeded torrents. To do it, just click on your total amount of seeding bonuses (at the top of the page). You will be redirected to exchange bonus page.

I have deleted the torrent links and so I cannot seed the fights without downloading the torrent links again.

  • All bt clients keep a backup torrents files.
  • If you have deleted the torrents files, you can find them in your pc.
Then go to: C:\Documents and Settings\Your-Username\Data Program\uTorrent, Bittorent, azureus, etc.
  • If you can't see these folders, you need follow these steps (for Windows XP):
  • Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
  • Also there are a short cut on all Windows: start => run => %appdata%\utorrent

What are the Download Slots and how do they work?

  • They are the number of torrents that you can download at the same time.
  • When you join the site, you have 10 slots. This means you can download 10 torrents simultaneously. But remember that the number of slots is related to your ratio.
  • If your Ratio is over 0.95, you have 10 slots.
  • If your Ratio is below 0.95, you have 4 slots.
  • If your Ratio is below 0.65, you have 1 slot.
  • WARNING:
Do not try to stockpile .torrent files on your desktop and add them later to beat the system. We automatically monitor how many active downloads you have in your client. If you have more simultaneous downloads than you are allowed, your download rights will be removed automatically.

Why can't I download anything?

  • There are many reasons, but we will detail the most important.
  • Your ratio is dangerously low, below 0.2
  • Your downloads rights have been disabled by H&R system.
  • Your downloads rights have been disabled by a Staff member.

Why can't I download DVD's and HD torrents?

  • To download DVD's and HD files, you need to have uploaded at least 10 GBs and have a ratio over 1.2

Why is my screen hideous?

  • What did I do to deserve this? Dear God, when will it end?
  • You have been naughty and your account has been Spanked.
  • Perhaps you have displayed vulgar forum behavior or maybe your ratio is shamefully low. It could be that you're an ungrateful leech, have vile potty-fingers or inexcusably failed to include screenshots with your excellent rated upload. Everyone is different and we here at WBVA don't like to pigeonhole our members. We appreciate the diverse group of individuals that comprise this great community. We also appreciate the many ways some of you have devised to transgress the various rules and codes of behavior that keep this site running smoothly. Unfortunately, there just aren't enough hours in the day for us, the hardworking staff, to think up new, appropriate punishments for each creative offence. Therefore, we've come up with one solution; one visually brutal punishment. The Spank.
  • If you've done something (or perhaps not done something) that has earned you a warning, for the duration of that warning you will be Spanked.
  • If you've earned yourself a place on our shitlist, for as long as you are shitlisted, you will also be Spanked.
  • As much as it pains us here at WBVA to inflict this on anyone, we feel that this is a necessary step to maintain the type of environment that our wonderful members have come to expect and appreciate. On this site, as in the real world, there are consequences to one's actions, and one of those consequences is now The Spank.

Why am I listed as not connectable? (And why should I care?)

  • The short version is that if you are not connectable, your upload and download speeds will suffer.
Think of getting connectable as having road signs that tell the data where to go.
  • Here is the simple way to get get connectable:
  • Decide on a Port or Ports depending on your client that you will be using for Bittorent downloads.
(We recommend something in the 40,000's.)
  • Specify this same Port or range of Ports in your Bittorent client (Usually found under options or preferences).
  • Open this same Port or Ports in your Firewall.
  • Find out how to open these Port or Ports in your Router if you have one. Go to www.portforward.com and follow the instructions.
You do not need to buy their software.
  • For more info on this topic you can visit this thread.

What is 'Flush your active torrents' button that shows up in our profile?

  • Flush torrents is a feature used to tell the tracker what files you are seeding and which ones you aren't.
Eg. If some torrents show up as seeding more than once, or torrents you have stopped seeding in your client still say seeding.
If everything looks ok then there is no need to use it.
